San Diego State vs Duke Kunshan University for study abroad: which is the better choice?

Duke Kunshan University is the more distinctive study abroad choice for most students because the setting, curriculum, and day-to-day experience are far less interchangeable with a typical U.S. semester. It offers a Duke-connected academic environment in China, classes with a strong global focus, and a much more immersive cross-cultural experience than San Diego State. San Diego State can still be appealing, but it usually feels more like a solid domestic university semester than a truly transformative abroad experience.

The biggest differentiator is location and immersion. At Duke Kunshan, you are living in Kunshan near Shanghai and Suzhou, studying in an international campus community while navigating China’s language, culture, infrastructure, and social norms in everyday life. That tends to produce much more personal growth than spending a term at San Diego State, which, while located in a fun city, does not create the same level of cultural stretch unless your goal is specifically to study in Southern California.

Academically, Duke Kunshan stands out because its courses are built around global, interdisciplinary learning and are shaped by its Duke affiliation. Many students choose it precisely because the classroom experience is tied closely to international perspectives, cross-border issues, and discussion with peers from different countries. San Diego State has plenty of legitimate academic strengths, but for study abroad, the academic experience is less unusual and less likely to feel meaningfully different from what you could already get at many U.S. campuses.

Personally, the social experience at Duke Kunshan is usually more intentional and close-knit. Because it is a smaller international campus, students often build tighter relationships across cultures and spend more time exploring the region together. San Diego State offers a more traditional large-campus social scene, which can be fun, but it may also be easier to slip into a routine that feels familiar rather than adventurous.

The main reason to pick San Diego State is practicality: easier adjustment, fewer cultural barriers, and a classic American college environment in a major coastal city. But if the question is which option is better as a study abroad experience in the fullest academic and personal sense, Duke Kunshan has the clearer edge.
