University of Minnesota or UC Berkeley for business: which is the better choice overall?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools for business and keep going back and forth. I know Berkeley has a huge name, but Minnesota also seems strong and would probably be a more comfortable fit for me.

I’m mostly wondering which one is generally considered the better choice for a business major overall.

For business specifically, UC Berkeley is usually seen as the more prestigious and higher-upside option overall. Berkeley’s Haas School of Business has a stronger national and international reputation, deeper recruiting reach for consulting, finance, and tech, and a location advantage because of its ties to the Bay Area. If your question is mostly about brand name and long-term recognition in business circles, Berkeley has the edge.

That said, Minnesota is not just a fallback. Carlson is a respected business school with a more contained campus environment, and excellent connections in the Twin Cities, especially for corporate, marketing, supply chain, and general business roles. For a student who wants a slightly less intense atmosphere and a business program that still carries real credibility, Minnesota can be a very smart choice.

Berkeley tends to fit the student who wants a very ambitious, fast-moving environment and is comfortable competing for opportunities. Haas is well known, but Berkeley’s path can also feel more pressure-filled. The payoff is that the school’s name opens doors widely, especially on the coasts and in highly selective industries.

Minnesota fits the student who values structure, support, and a campus experience that may feel easier to settle into. Carlson has a more straightforward business identity from the start, and many students find it easier to build relationships with professors, join business organizations, and stand out. If “comfortable fit” matters a lot to you, that should not be treated as a small factor, because fit can affect grades, leadership, internships, and overall momentum.

So in pure overall business reputation, Berkeley comes out ahead. But if Minnesota would be meaningfully cheaper, less stressful, or a place where you’d thrive more consistently, that can absolutely outweigh the prestige gap for many students.
