Which undergraduate business analytics program is stronger: the University of Minnesota or UIUC?

The main tradeoff is that UIUC’s Information Systems + Data Science major is the more explicitly technical, data-centered undergraduate path, while Minnesota’s Carlson School offers a broader business education through Management Information Systems with strong access to Twin Cities employers. UIUC benefits from a deep campus ecosystem in computer science, statistics, and data science. Minnesota’s Carlson School is especially well positioned for internships and full-time roles with major Minneapolis–St. Paul companies in retail, health care, financial services, and operations.

At UIUC, the IS+DS curriculum is designed around information systems, programming, databases, analytics, and data-driven business decisions. That structure can be particularly useful for students aiming at analytics consulting, business intelligence, product analytics, or roles that expect comfort with SQL, Python, and quantitative work.

At Minnesota, an MIS major can still lead very effectively to analytics careers, especially when paired with statistics, data science, programming, or business analytics coursework. Carlson’s smaller-school setting within a large university and its close local corporate network can create a more business-facing, relationship-driven experience. It may be an especially compelling option for someone interested in applying analytics to supply chain, marketing, health care, or retail and who sees themselves working in the Twin Cities after graduation.

For a student whose priority is the strongest built-in undergraduate preparation for a technical business analytics career, UIUC has the edge because IS+DS is more directly aligned with data science and analytics. Minnesota is an excellent alternative when its cost, campus experience, or Twin Cities employer access is meaningfully better, but plan to deliberately add technical coursework to make the analytics preparation comparable.
