Caltech is the stronger pick for an undergraduate science major. For a student who wants the center of gravity on campus to be science, Caltech offers a deeper and more immersive environment than Notre Dame.

One major differentiator is academic concentration. At Caltech, science is not just one strong area among many; it defines the institution. The curriculum is famously rigorous, the peer culture is heavily STEM-oriented, and even introductory courses are taught in a setting where most classmates are deeply invested in technical fields. Notre Dame has solid science departments and strong undergraduate teaching, but it is a broader university where science shares space with many other academic priorities.
