American University or University of Illinois for engineering: which is the better choice?

For engineering, the University of Illinois is the much stronger option overall. Illinois has a large, established College of Engineering, broad specialization choices, major research infrastructure, and deep recruiting pipelines with engineering employers. American University is far better known for international affairs, policy, and social sciences, and it does not offer the same scale or reputation in engineering.

A student who wants a traditional, high-powered engineering experience will usually find Illinois far more compelling. You would be stepping into a campus where engineering is one of the school’s central strengths, which affects everything from course depth to lab access to student project teams. That matters because strong engineering programs tend to create more opportunities simply by having more faculty, more classmates in the field, more funded research, and more employers showing up specifically to hire engineers.

American makes more sense for someone whose interests sit at the intersection of technology and policy, or who is drawn first to Washington, DC and wants an academically smaller environment. If your real priority is a campus close to government agencies, nonprofits, and policy organizations, AU has advantages tied to location. But if the question is the stronger engineering education itself, AU is not usually the school students choose for that.

Employers know Illinois well as an engineering school, which can help with recruiting in industry.

The main reasons someone would still choose American are if they strongly prefer its size, urban setting, or broader DC-centered opportunities and do not need a top-tier engineering environment. For most students deciding purely on engineering education, opportunities, and outcomes, Illinois is the clearer choice.
