American University vs UMass Amherst for business: which is better for undergrads?

I’m trying to decide between American University and UMass Amherst for business and I’m stuck on which one would be the better choice as an undergrad.

I care most about things like the strength of the business program, internship opportunities, and how much each school helps with getting jobs after graduation.

For undergraduate business, American University makes more sense for a student who wants day-to-day access to Washington, DC internships and a smaller private-school setting, while UMass Amherst is often more appealing for someone who wants a larger campus experience and a business school with a broad alumni base. American’s Kogod School of Business benefits from its DC location, which is especially useful for internships during the school year in consulting, nonprofits, government-adjacent business roles, and policy-connected finance work. UMass Amherst’s Isenberg School of Management has a strong reputation in undergraduate business and tends to offer a bigger, more traditional business-school environment with extensive student organizations and recruiting activity.

If internships during the academic year are your top priority, American has a real advantage. Being in DC makes it much easier to intern part time without needing to wait for summer, and that can help you build a resume earlier. Kogod students often benefit from connections to employers in the DC area where business overlaps with public affairs, international work, and mission-driven organizations.

UMass Amherst stands out for the student who wants scale, school spirit, and a large public university network. Isenberg is one of the more visible parts of UMass, and students who are proactive can tap into a wide range of recruiting pipelines, especially in finance, accounting, operations, and corporate roles. The campus tends to offer more of the classic college experience than American.

For job outcomes, both schools can work well, but the type of access differs. American gives you location-based access and easier in-semester professional experience. UMass gives you a larger business cohort and a strong flagship-university network that can be valuable over time.

If cost is meaningfully lower at UMass, that would matter a lot because business outcomes often depend more on your internships, grades, and networking than on a small difference in school name. If prices are similar, I’d lean American for a student who wants constant exposure to internships and professional life early, and UMass for someone who wants a bigger business program and a more traditional campus setting.
