Adelphi vs Stony Brook for computer science: which is better for a CS major?

I’m trying to decide between Adelphi and Stony Brook for computer science, and I keep seeing very different opinions about both schools. I’m mostly looking at the overall CS experience, including the strength of the program and how it may help with internships or jobs after college.

I want to know which one is generally the better choice for a computer science major.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and reputation versus smaller classes and more personal attention. For computer science specifically, Stony Brook has the stronger name in the field, a deeper CS course ecosystem, and more visibility with employers for technical recruiting. Adelphi can offer a more intimate classroom experience, but it does not carry the same weight in CS or have the same breadth of opportunities built around the major.

If your question is which school is better for computer science in an overall sense, Stony Brook is the clearer pick. Its CS program is much more established, it sits within a large research university environment, and students tend to have access to more advanced electives, more peers deeply focused on computing, and a stronger pipeline into internships and entry-level tech roles.

That matters because CS outcomes are shaped not just by the diploma, but by the surrounding ecosystem. At Stony Brook, you are more likely to find a larger coding community, more student organizations tied to tech, more research activity, and more classmates competing for and sharing information about internships. For a motivated CS student, that kind of environment usually creates more momentum.

Adelphi is not a bad option, especially if you know you learn better with smaller classes or want more direct faculty interaction. In some cases, that support can help a student perform better academically.

Unless Adelphi is offering a dramatically better financial package or there is a very specific personal reason it fits you better, Stony Brook is the stronger choice for a CS major.
