Is Ohio State or Northwestern better for finance careers?

Northwestern is the stronger option for finance careers. It has a more direct pipeline into Chicago investment banking, consulting, and buy-side recruiting, and its alumni network carries particular weight in high-finance circles. Being in Evanston also makes networking, school-year internships, coffee chats, and firm events much easier than they are from Columbus.

The biggest differentiator is recruiting access. Northwestern places very well into investment banking and related finance roles, especially through on-campus recruiting and student organizations that are closely tied to firms in Chicago and New York. For a student targeting competitive front-office paths, that proximity and employer familiarity matter a lot.

The second differentiator is brand positioning in finance. Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business is well respected and can absolutely lead to strong outcomes, especially for corporate finance, accounting, commercial banking, and Midwestern employers. But Northwestern’s name tends to open more doors at the most selective finance employers, particularly early in the process when firms are deciding whom to interview.

A third difference is the peer and alumni ecosystem around finance. At Northwestern, you are surrounded by a smaller, more concentrated pool of students aiming for elite finance roles, which often creates tighter mentorship and better hand-me-down recruiting knowledge. Ohio State has a huge alumni base and plenty of opportunities, but students often need to be more self-directed to break into the top end of finance recruiting.

Ohio State becomes more compelling mainly on cost or if you prefer a large campus with broader business options. From a pure finance-career standpoint, especially for investment banking or highly selective finance roles, Northwestern gives you the clearer edge.
