Columbia has the edge for internship access during undergrad, especially if you want to intern during the school year. Being in New York City makes part-time internships at finance, media, consulting, startups, nonprofits, research labs, and major hospitals far more logistically realistic, and Columbia students can often build experience without waiting for summer.

Location is the biggest differentiator. At Columbia, students can commute to internships across Manhattan and nearby areas during the semester, which matters a lot if your goal is steady resume-building from first or second year onward. At UIUC, strong internships absolutely exist, but they are much more centered on summer recruiting or require remote work because Champaign-Urbana is not a major internship market in the same way.

Employer density also favors Columbia. Companies routinely recruit in New York, and alumni presence is especially visible in industries like finance, consulting, media, public policy, and certain startup and research spaces. That does not mean UIUC lacks recruiter attention. UIUC’s advantage is that it can be exceptionally strong for technical fields. But for the specific question of realistic undergrad internship access across both the school year and summer, Columbia’s day-to-day proximity to employers is the more powerful advantage.

One practical nuance: if your intended field is highly technical, the gap narrows because UIUC students place very well into summer internships. If you care most about having lots of in-semester options and easy access to employers while classes are in session, Columbia is the one that offers more of that.
