Arizona State vs University of Illinois at Chicago for an urban campus feel

UIC has the more urban campus feel by a clear margin. Its main campus sits just west of downtown Chicago, is woven into the city grid, and gives you immediate access to CTA trains and buses, dense neighborhoods, restaurants, museums, and downtown events. Arizona State’s Tempe campus is active and surrounded by plenty to do, but it reads more as a large college district in a metro area than a campus embedded in a major city core.

Public transit is one of the biggest differences. At UIC, daily life can genuinely be train-and-bus based, and it is realistic to get around Chicago without a car for classes, internships, food, concerts, and weekend plans. The Blue Line is right by campus, and the city’s transit network makes off-campus life feel integrated into the school experience.

At ASU, the Tempe area has light rail access and a lot of nearby activity, especially along Mill Avenue, but Phoenix metro is still much more car-oriented overall. You can use transit for some trips, especially between Tempe, downtown Phoenix, and the airport, yet the broader environment does not feel as naturally walkable or as city-saturated in the same way Chicago does.

The off-campus environment also feels different block to block. UIC students are close to neighborhoods like the West Loop, Pilsen, and the Loop, so restaurants, coffee shops, cultural spaces, and internships are part of everyday city life. ASU has good student-oriented dining and entertainment nearby, but it feels more like a self-contained campus scene with city access rather than full urban immersion.
