University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Boston University for internship opportunities?

Boston University has the edge for internship opportunities because its location in Boston makes part-time, in-semester internships much easier to access. Being in a major city puts BU students close to hospitals, biotech firms, finance companies, startups, media organizations, nonprofits, and corporate offices, and that proximity matters when employers want students who can work during the semester. BU also builds a lot of pre-professional activity into campus life, so students often use the city as an extension of the classroom.

The biggest difference is geographic access. At BU, students can realistically commute to internships without needing a car or a summer relocation, which can make it easier to gain experience earlier and stack multiple internships before graduation. UIUC students absolutely get strong internships too, especially in engineering, computer science, business, and tech, but many of those opportunities are more concentrated in the summer or require travel to Chicago, other Midwest cities, or major tech hubs.

Another differentiator is the style of employer connection. UIUC has a very powerful alumni network and excellent recruiting pipelines, particularly for technical fields, so for engineering and CS it can compete with almost anyone. But BU offers broader day-to-day access across many industries because employers are already nearby, and that tends to help students in fields where networking, informational interviews, and semester-time experience are especially valuable.

Industry matters here. If you are leaning toward engineering or computer science, UIUC may match or even outperform BU because of its national reputation and recruiting strength in those areas. For most other students asking specifically about internship access and career connections, BU is the more convenient and opportunity-rich environment.
