Is the University of Michigan or Brandeis University more academically intense?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus closeness: Michigan often feels more intense because it is a very large research university with many high-powered departments, bigger intro courses, and more self-direction, while Brandeis tends to feel intense in a smaller, more discussion-based, professor-accessible environment. Brandeis is absolutely rigorous too, but the pressure usually feels more personal and classroom-centered than systemically competitive.

At a place that large, it is easier to end up in weed-out style classes or courses where you need to be proactive about office hours, advising, and finding your academic footing. Students who thrive there often like being surrounded by a lot of ambitious peers and a campus culture where high achievement is very visible.

Brandeis can still be very challenging, especially in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, but the experience is often less impersonal. Classes are smaller on average, professors are more accessible early on, and students often describe the atmosphere as serious without being relentlessly cutthroat. That can make the workload feel more manageable even when the material itself is demanding.

Michigan is the more intense of the two. Brandeis is still academically serious, but its smaller scale usually makes the pressure feel more contained and supported.
