For a student who wants four years to feel immersive and communal, Michigan usually creates that more naturally than Boston University.

The biggest difference is the setting. Michigan is anchored in Ann Arbor, which functions very much like a college town, so a lot of student life revolves around campus, nearby restaurants, football weekends, clubs, and traditions shared by undergrads. Boston University is woven into the city of Boston along Commonwealth Avenue, which gives students access to a great urban environment but can make the experience feel more spread out and less unified.

School spirit is another major separator. Michigan is one of the clearest examples of a university where athletics, traditions, and alumni pride shape everyday student culture, even for students who are not sports fans. BU has school pride too, especially around hockey, but it does not tend to dominate campus life in the same way or create the same all-campus energy.
