Penn State vs UMass Amherst for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and internships?

I’m trying to decide between Penn State and UMass Amherst and want to go into finance after college. Both seem like solid schools, but I’m not sure which one has the better reputation or recruiting pipeline for finance internships and full-time jobs.

I’m mainly looking at how each school can help with getting into finance careers, especially through alumni connections and campus recruiting.

Penn State has the clearer edge for finance recruiting and internships. Its alumni network is enormous, especially across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, and that matters a lot in finance where referrals, club pipelines, and alumni outreach often drive early opportunities. It also has a more established presence in business recruiting through the Smeal College of Business and a stronger reputation with employers who hire at scale.

One concrete advantage is alumni reach. Penn State’s network is famously active, and in finance that can translate into more informational interviews, more student-to-alum connections on Wall Street and in major regional offices, and a broader base of graduates working in banking, asset management, corporate finance, and consulting-adjacent roles. UMass Amherst has solid alumni support too, but Penn State’s finance network is usually more visible and easier to tap into.

Another difference is on-campus recruiting structure. Smeal has a long-standing employer pipeline and a stronger brand in business-specific recruiting, which helps with internships in corporate finance, commercial banking, and some front-office paths. At both schools, the most competitive finance outcomes still depend heavily on your GPA, leadership, technical prep, and whether you join the right student organizations, but Penn State tends to offer more built-in access to recruiters and finance-focused peers.

Location is the one area where UMass Amherst has a real argument, since it is closer to Boston and not far from other Northeast finance markets. That can help for networking and certain regional internships, especially in asset management, insurance, and corporate finance roles tied to New England. But for overall recruiting depth, employer recognition, and alumni leverage, Penn State is the stronger platform.
