Penn State vs Fordham for NYC internships: which has better access and recruiting?

The biggest practical tradeoff is immediate proximity versus broader scale: Fordham puts you in New York during the school year, which makes attending in-person interviews, networking events, and part-time internships much easier, while Penn State offers a much larger alumni base and a more expansive on-campus recruiting ecosystem. For NYC internships specifically, Fordham’s location is a real advantage because students can realistically intern during the semester without travel barriers. Penn State can still place students in New York, but it usually takes more planning and is often more concentrated in summer recruiting.

Fordham tends to have the edge in day-to-day access. Being in the city matters a lot for industries that still value coffee chats, office visits, and semester internships, especially finance, media, communications, nonprofits, and some business roles. Employers that want students who can come in once or twice a week during the academic year may naturally pull more from schools already in the city.

Penn State’s advantage is scale and reach. It has a very large alumni network, strong school spirit, and a campus recruiting machine that can open doors well beyond Pennsylvania. In New York, that can absolutely help, especially for bigger firms that hire nationally. But the process is less frictionless because you are not physically nearby for spontaneous networking or in-semester work.

Recruiting also depends on what kind of internship you mean. If you want frequent access to NYC during the semester and the ability to build experience early, Fordham is usually better positioned. If you are aiming for larger structured pipelines and are comfortable targeting summer internships through formal recruiting, Penn State can compete well because of its network and employer visibility.

Fordham usually offers the more direct path. Penn State is still a strong option, but its NYC access is more dependent on using alumni connections and traveling strategically, whereas Fordham students are already where many of those opportunities happen.
