Colorado State has the more naturally outdoorsy day-to-day campus culture. Arizona State absolutely has access to great outdoor activities, especially around Tempe and the rest of the Phoenix area, but the campus culture reads more urban, social, and big-university energetic than distinctly outdoors-focused.

A student who wants the outdoors to feel visible on a normal weekday will probably notice that more at Colorado State. CSU has a strong bike culture, easy access to the mountains and foothills, and a student body that tends to treat outdoor recreation as a regular part of life.
