How much harder is it to get into UC Berkeley than Santa Clara University?

UC Berkeley is meaningfully harder to get into than Santa Clara University. In practice, Berkeley is one of the most selective public universities in the country, while Santa Clara is selective but operates at a noticeably less extreme level. That difference tends to show up in how competitive the applicant pool is, how little room Berkeley has for applicants who are merely strong rather than exceptional, and how much major choice can matter at Berkeley.

Berkeley is the kind of place where top grades in demanding classes are often the baseline, not the differentiator. It attracts a huge volume of high-achieving applicants from California, across the U.S., and internationally, and some colleges or intended majors are especially difficult to enter.
