William & Mary vs Fordham for finance careers
I’m trying to decide between William & Mary and Fordham, and my main goal is to get into finance after college. Both seem to have solid reputations, but I’m not sure which one has the stronger path into internships, recruiting, and jobs in finance.
I’m looking at this mostly from a career outcomes perspective, especially for someone who wants the best shot at entering finance straight after graduation.

Fordham has the clearer edge for finance careers, mainly because of location, recruiting access, and the day-to-day proximity to New York finance. Being in the Bronx with a strong Manhattan presence makes it much easier to reach internships during the school year, attend employer events, and build relationships with alumni working in banks, asset management, and related firms. For a student focused on entering finance right after graduation, that access matters a lot.
The biggest differentiator is internship timing and convenience. At Fordham, students can realistically intern part-time in New York during the semester, not just in the summer. That creates more chances to add relevant experience before full-time recruiting starts, and finance hiring often rewards students who already have multiple internships or direct exposure to the industry.
Another advantage is employer visibility. Fordham’s business school has longstanding ties to New York employers, and finance is one of the areas where being physically close to firms helps with networking, coffee chats, information sessions, and quick-turn interview opportunities. Even when formal recruiting is competitive everywhere, being nearby makes it easier to stay engaged with the process.
William & Mary is still a respected school with strong academics and a loyal alumni base, and it can absolutely place students into finance. But its strongest pipeline is not as naturally tied to Wall Street or New York-based finance recruiting as Fordham’s is. You may need to be more intentional about traveling for networking, concentrating your summer experience, and building those connections from farther away.
One more practical point is peer ecosystem. At Fordham, you are likely to be surrounded by more students explicitly targeting finance roles in New York, which can help with recruiting knowledge, student clubs, interview prep, and alumni outreach. For this specific goal, Fordham gives you a more direct runway.
