For finance careers, is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Dartmouth a better choice for undergrad?
I’m trying to decide between UIUC and Dartmouth and want to go into finance after college. I know both schools are respected, but I’m not sure how much the name of the school really matters for recruiting into finance jobs.
I’m mostly trying to understand which one would give me a stronger path into finance careers.

Dartmouth usually gives you the stronger path into finance, especially for highly competitive roles like investment banking and buy-side recruiting later on. Its small size, alumni network, and long-standing presence in Wall Street recruiting tend to make access more direct, and Dartmouth students are heavily represented in finance pipelines. The school’s brand carries a lot of weight in East Coast finance circles, and recruiting is often more structured for students aiming at top firms.
Dartmouth makes the most sense for a student who wants a campus culture where elite finance recruiting is a very established track and where alumni outreach is likely to be unusually responsive. If you think you may want banking right after college, or you want the option to pivot into top MBA or hedge fund paths later, Dartmouth gives you a smoother runway. Its liberal arts setting also does not hurt in finance recruiting at all; firms regularly hire from schools like Dartmouth because they value the network, communication skills, and signaling power.
UIUC is still a very real path into finance, but it is more self-directed and tends to reward students who are proactive about joining the right student organizations, building technical skills early, and networking hard. For a student who is cost-conscious, highly motivated, and comfortable competing for selective finance clubs or business opportunities, UIUC can absolutely work. In particular, if you are in a strong program there and take advantage of finance-related organizations, alumni, and internship recruiting, you can reach solid outcomes in corporate finance, asset management, and investment banking, though the path is usually less automatic.
So if the question is purely which school gives the stronger built-in launchpad into finance, Dartmouth has the edge. UIUC can still lead to excellent finance outcomes, but it usually requires more hustle to reach the same recruiting opportunities that may come more naturally at Dartmouth.
