Is UC San Diego or Santa Clara University better for internships in tech?

Santa Clara University has the edge for tech internships because of its location in the middle of Silicon Valley. Being in Santa Clara puts students very close to major tech employers, startups, and smaller firms that hire interns during the school year, not just in the summer. That proximity makes networking, coffee chats, part-time internships, and quick trips to company offices much more practical.

Santa Clara also benefits from a strong alumni presence in Bay Area tech. For internships, that matters because a lot of opportunities come through referrals, employer familiarity with the school, and repeated recruiting pipelines. Even when a company does not run a huge formal campus process, students at Santa Clara are often positioned well for off-campus recruiting simply because they are nearby and connected.

UC San Diego is still very solid for tech internships, especially with San Diego’s growing biotech, engineering, defense, and software scene. It has strong employer recognition in technical fields, and students absolutely land internships at big tech companies. But for pure access and convenience, San Diego is not as dense or immediate a tech internship environment as Silicon Valley.

Another difference is the school-year internship advantage. At Santa Clara, it is easier to take on part-time roles during fall, winter, or spring because many companies are within commuting distance. At UC San Diego, students often rely more heavily on summer internships or remote roles unless they target the local San Diego market.
