University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs Columbia for engineering: which is better?

I’m trying to decide between UIUC and Columbia for engineering and want to compare them in a general sense, not based on this year’s details. I’m mainly looking at things like academics, reputation, and how strong the engineering program is overall.

I know they’re both well-known schools, but I’m not sure how people usually compare them for engineering.

For engineering specifically, UIUC has the edge in overall program strength and reputation. Its College of Engineering is one of the most established in the country, especially in areas like computer engineering, electrical engineering, civil, mechanical, and materials, and it is known for a deep bench of faculty, large-scale research, and strong employer recruiting.

One major differentiator is breadth and depth. UIUC offers a larger engineering ecosystem, with more specialized departments, bigger labs, and a campus culture where engineering is one of the defining academic centers of the university. That tends to matter if you want lots of technical electives, strong peer communities in engineering, and a school where the engineering identity is especially visible.

Another is industry reputation. Employers in engineering and tech know UIUC extremely well, and its graduates have a long track record in both industry and graduate study.

Columbia is still excellent, but its advantage is more about the overall university brand, location, and access to the broader opportunities of New York City. It can be especially appealing if you want engineering combined with finance, entrepreneurship, policy, or cross-disciplinary work in a dense urban setting.

So when people compare them just on engineering, UIUC is often viewed as the more serious engineering destination, while Columbia is the more globally branded university with a strong but less dominant engineering presence.
