Is Purdue a better value than UIUC for engineering?

For engineering, Purdue is often the better value on cost-to-degree strength, especially if the price difference is noticeable for you. Purdue has a very strong engineering reputation, and is well known nationally, so the degree tends to travel well. UIUC is also excellent and in some engineering areas has especially strong academic prestige, but from a pure ROI angle, it is harder to call it the better deal unless your cost there is similar or you have a specific reason to prefer Illinois.

Purdue makes the most sense for the student who wants a nationally recognized engineering brand without paying extra just for marginal prestige differences. Employers recruit heavily there, the engineering college is large and established, and Purdue has a long-standing reputation for producing practical, industry-ready engineers. If you are looking at broad engineering outcomes across many fields, Purdue often lands in the sweet spot where the school name is strong enough that you are not sacrificing much, if anything, while potentially paying less.

UIUC fits the student who is willing to pay more because they specifically want Illinois’s strengths, not just a famous engineering school in general. In fields like computer engineering, electrical engineering, CS-related areas, and some research-intensive tracks, UIUC can carry a bit more weight academically and with certain employers or grad programs. That does not mean Purdue lacks respect, only that Illinois may justify the extra cost if you are targeting a niche where its department-level reputation is a real advantage.

After graduation, the difference in school name usually matters less than internships, project experience, GPA, and recruiting hustle. Both schools open serious doors in engineering. So if Purdue is meaningfully cheaper, that usually points to Purdue as the stronger value. If UIUC comes in at a similar net cost, or you already know you want one of the areas where Illinois is especially prominent, then the value comparison becomes much closer.
