Is Purdue or NYU better value for the money for an undergraduate degree?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Purdue usually costs far less, while NYU can offer stronger location-driven access in fields tied closely to New York City. Purdue’s tuition, especially for in-state students and often even for many out-of-state students, is typically much lower than NYU’s, and West Lafayette living costs are usually far below Manhattan housing and daily expenses. That gap is large enough that, for many families paying anywhere near full price, Purdue comes out ahead on value unless NYU gives substantial aid or the student is targeting a field where NYC access materially changes internships and first-job options.

For engineering, computer science, business analytics, and many STEM-heavy paths, Purdue is hard to beat on return for the cost. It has a very strong national reputation in those areas, strong employer recruiting, and graduates regularly land solid outcomes without carrying the same debt burden that NYU can create. If the question is pure cost-versus-career payoff in those fields, Purdue has a real advantage.

NYU becomes more compelling when its network and location are central to the plan. Finance, some media and arts paths, entertainment business, fashion, public policy, and certain social science or pre-professional tracks can benefit from being embedded in New York during the school year. The issue is that this advantage only pays off as value if the price difference is manageable, either through generous aid, family affordability, or unusually strong fit with industries concentrated in the city.

Living costs matter more here than many students expect. At NYU, housing, food, transportation, and day-to-day spending can push the total cost much higher, while Purdue’s surrounding cost structure is more controlled. That means even if both schools produce strong outcomes, the debt picture after graduation can look very different.

So on value for money, Purdue is the better bet for most undergraduates, especially in technical fields and especially without major financial aid from NYU. NYU is worth the premium only in narrower cases where the student gets good aid or has a very specific reason to capitalize on New York-based opportunities from day one.
