The beach setting also shapes the atmosphere a lot, with a more laid-back, outdoorsy, surf-and-house-party culture than most big state schools.

At UCSB, the party scene is tied to geography. Students live, walk, and socialize in the same small area, which makes it easy for things to feel active on a random Thursday or Saturday without much planning.
