San Jose State is much more integrated into downtown San Jose, and that creates a different experience that can feel less self-contained.

UC Riverside has the classic large-campus environment many out-of-state students picture when they leave home: a defined campus, more centralized student life, and a broader sense that people are there for the full college experience. San Jose State has plenty happening, but it is more commuter-influenced and more urban in rhythm, so social life can feel less concentrated around campus.

The second differentiator is value for the price you would pay as a nonresident. Out-of-state tuition at either public university is substantial, so the question is whether the experience and resources feel worth that premium.
