Is San Jose State or Cal Poly Pomona better for city life?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and I care a lot about being in a place that feels like a real city. I want to know which one gives more access to things like restaurants, events, public transit, internships, and just an overall urban environment.

I’m mostly comparing the day-to-day city experience around each campus, not academics.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that San Jose State is embedded in a true downtown, while Cal Poly Pomona sits in a more suburban, car-oriented part of the eastern LA area. If day-to-day city life matters a lot, SJSU gives you much more immediate access to restaurants, coffee shops, concerts, events, offices, and transit right outside campus. Cal Poly Pomona has access to the broader Los Angeles region, but the campus itself does not feel urban in the same way.

SJSU is in downtown San Jose, so you can actually walk to a lot of what you’re describing. There are bars, eateries, museums, music venues, and frequent events in the core of the city, plus light rail, buses, and Caltrain connections nearby.

Cal Poly Pomona gives you proximity to a huge metro area, but everyday life there is different. The campus is in Pomona near freeways and neighboring suburbs, and most students rely much more on cars to get around. You can reach food spots, concerts, and internships across LA County or the Inland Empire, but it usually takes more planning and travel, so the city experience is less immediate and less walkable.

For overall urban atmosphere, San Jose State is the clearer answer. Cal Poly Pomona can work if you are excited by the wider Southern California region and do not mind driving for most of your off-campus life, but SJSU is the one that actually feels like living in a city every day.
