Which is better for accounting careers: San Jose State or San Diego State?

I’m trying to decide between San Jose State and San Diego State and accounting is my main interest. I want to pick the school that would give me the stronger path into accounting careers after college.

I’m mostly looking for a clear comparison of the two schools for accounting opportunities, like recruiting, internships, and overall career outcomes.

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and recruiting reach: San Jose State sits in the middle of Silicon Valley, which can be a real advantage for internships and accounting roles tied to tech companies, while San Diego State has a larger, more broadly recognized business-school presence and a strong alumni network across Southern California. For accounting specifically, both can get you to public accounting, corporate accounting, and finance-adjacent roles, but the shape of the pipeline is a little different. San Jose State tends to benefit from proximity to Bay Area employers, and San Diego State tends to offer a wider traditional campus recruiting ecosystem through its business school.

If your goal is accounting recruiting during college, San Diego State often has the more established business-school feel. Its Fowler College of Business is a major part of campus life, and that can translate into more structured employer engagement, student organizations, and networking channels that are useful for accounting majors. That matters because accounting hiring is often driven by repeated contact with firms through clubs, events, and alumni.

San Jose State’s edge is that being in San Jose can make part-time internships during the school year more practical, especially with companies in the Bay Area. For students targeting corporate accounting, audit, tax, or internal finance roles connected to large regional employers and tech firms, that geography is hard to ignore. The school has strong ties to local industry, and for some students that day-to-day access is more valuable than a more polished business-school brand.

For overall career outcomes, neither school closes doors if you perform well, join accounting organizations, recruit early, and line up internships. But if the question is strictly which offers the stronger path for accounting careers on average, I’d give a slight edge to San Diego State because of its broader business recruiting structure and alumni reach, especially if you are not certain you want to stay in the Bay Area. I’d lean toward San Jose State only if you specifically want to build your career in Northern California and want the location advantage to drive internships while you are still in school.
