San Jose State vs San Diego State for return on investment

I’m trying to decide between San Jose State and San Diego State and keep seeing people talk about return on investment. I’m mostly thinking about whether the cost of attendance makes sense compared with the kind of salary and opportunities graduates usually get after college.

I’m not asking about current rankings or admit rates, just which school tends to give students a better ROI overall.

For pure return on investment, San Jose State often has the edge, especially for students heading into engineering, computer science, business, or other fields tied to Silicon Valley hiring. Its location puts students close to internships, part-time work, and recruiting pipelines at tech and business employers, which can translate into stronger early-career earnings and faster payback on college costs. If ROI is your main metric and your major connects to the Bay Area job market, SJSU is hard to overlook.

San Jose State makes the most sense for students who want college to function as a direct bridge into a regional economy with a lot of high-paying employers nearby. The practical advantage is not just salary after graduation, but access during college: internships during the school year, alumni connections in local companies, and a campus reputation that is especially useful in applied, career-oriented majors. That combination tends to matter a lot for ROI because graduating with experience can improve both your first job and your earning trajectory.

San Diego State can still be a very good value, but its ROI case is a little different. It tends to appeal more to students who want a broader traditional college experience while still having solid outcomes in business, hospitality, public health, communications, and some STEM areas. For students entering industries where location matters less for immediate high salaries, or for those who want to build a career in Southern California, SDSU can absolutely pay off, just not always with the same salary upside people associate with San Jose State’s proximity to Silicon Valley.

A lot depends on your major and your actual net cost. If both schools would cost you about the same, SJSU usually comes out ahead on ROI in fields tied to tech and engineering. If SDSU would be meaningfully cheaper for you personally, or if your intended field aligns more with SDSU’s strengths and regional network, that can narrow or even erase the difference.
