Is San Jose State or UCLA better for a business major?
I’m a high school student trying to decide between these two schools and I’m interested in studying business. I know one is more selective, but I’m mostly trying to understand how they compare for a business degree, internships, and overall opportunities after graduation.
I’m not looking at just prestige. I want to know which school is generally considered the better choice for business students.

The biggest practical tradeoff is specialized, Silicon Valley-centered business access at San Jose State versus UCLA’s broader national brand, larger alumni reach, and wider post-grad mobility. For business specifically, San Jose State offers an actual undergraduate business program through the Lucas College and Graduate School of Business, while UCLA does not have a traditional undergrad business major in the same way. UCLA students interested in business usually go through Business Economics, Economics, or related majors and build business experience through clubs, internships, and recruiting.
For internships, both schools are well placed, but in different ways. San Jose State benefits from being right in San Jose, with especially strong proximity to tech companies, startups, and local corporate roles. That can make part-time internships during the school year more accessible. UCLA has excellent access too, especially in Los Angeles for finance, consulting, entertainment business, marketing, and larger-name employers, and its brand tends to travel more easily outside California.
For the classroom side, San Jose State is often the more straightforward choice if you want a clearly defined undergraduate business education with concentrations and a practical, career-oriented setup. UCLA can absolutely lead to strong business outcomes, but students often need to be more intentional about piecing together the path through major selection, extracurriculars, and recruiting. That route works very well, but it is less direct.
After graduation, UCLA usually carries more weight overall because of its reputation, network, and visibility across industries. But for someone who wants to study business as an undergraduate major and start building experience quickly, San Jose State is a very credible option, especially for careers tied to Silicon Valley.
So if the question is strictly which school is better for a business major, San Jose State has the cleaner academic advantage because it actually offers the more direct undergrad business path. If the question is which school offers stronger overall opportunities after graduation, UCLA has the edge.
