Which is harder to get into, San Jose State or Santa Clara University?

I’m a high school junior trying to get a realistic sense of college admissions. Both schools are on my list, but I keep hearing that one is much more selective than the other.

I’m mostly trying to understand which one is generally harder to get into overall.

Santa Clara University is harder to get into overall. It is a private university with a more selective admissions process, and applicants are typically competing in a smaller, more curated pool than at San Jose State. Santa Clara also uses a more holistic review, which can make the bar feel higher across academics, activities, and overall presentation.

San Jose State is selective in a different way, but usually not at the same overall level. As a California State University, it relies heavily on academic factors and, for many majors, admission can depend a lot on your GPA and whether the program is impacted. That means some SJSU majors can be quite competitive, especially in fields like engineering or computer science, but the university as a whole is not usually considered as difficult to enter as Santa Clara.

Another concrete difference is the applicant profile each school attracts. Santa Clara draws many students looking for a smaller private school experience in Silicon Valley, with strong academics and significant resources per student, so the applicant pool tends to be especially polished. San Jose State gets a broader mix of in-state applicants and has a more formula-driven process, which makes it easier to estimate your chances but does not usually make it the tougher admit overall.

Santa Clara is the one.
