Is San Jose State or UC Berkeley better for computer science?
I’m a high school junior trying to figure out which school would be the stronger choice for computer science overall. I know Berkeley is more prestigious, but SJSU is also known for being close to Silicon Valley and practical for tech careers.
I’m mainly trying to understand which one is generally better for CS in terms of academics, opportunities, and career outcomes.

UC Berkeley is the stronger choice for computer science overall. Its CS program has much greater academic depth, a wider range of advanced courses and research areas, and a level of faculty strength and national reputation that San Jose State does not match. For pure program quality, Berkeley is in a different tier.
On academics, Berkeley gives you access to a broader and more rigorous CS environment. That matters if you want exposure to areas like AI, systems, theory, machine learning, robotics, security, or research-intensive work, because Berkeley has more depth across all of those fields and a larger concentration of students pushing at a very high level.
On opportunities, San Jose State absolutely benefits from its Silicon Valley location and has strong practical industry connections, especially for internships and local recruiting. But Berkeley also feeds heavily into top tech employers and startups, while adding stronger access to elite research labs, high-profile professors, competitive student groups, and a broader national and international alumni network.
On career outcomes, both schools can lead to solid software jobs, and San Jose State does especially well for students targeting industry right away. The difference is that Berkeley tends to open more doors across the full range of outcomes: top-tier software engineering roles, selective internships, research positions, startups, and graduate school pathways. That flexibility is a big reason it comes out ahead.
Cost and admissions structure can still matter. San Jose State can be a smart option if affordability, direct practical training, and staying tightly connected to local tech hiring are your priorities. But if the question is which school is better for CS overall in academics, opportunities, and long-term reach, Berkeley has the clearer edge.
