San Jose State vs UC Berkeley: which is better value for money for a college degree?

I’m trying to decide between San Jose State and UC Berkeley, and cost is a big factor for my family. I know Berkeley has a stronger reputation overall, but SJSU seems much more affordable.

I’m mainly trying to understand which one tends to give better value for the money spent in terms of academics, internships, and career outcomes.

For value for money, San Jose State often wins if keeping debt low is the priority, especially for majors tied closely to Silicon Valley hiring. SJSU is usually much cheaper, sits in the middle of the South Bay job market, and has a long track record of feeding graduates into local tech, engineering, and business roles. UC Berkeley brings more academic prestige and a wider national and international brand, but the extra cost is not always matched by a proportionally better return for every student.

On internships and early career access, SJSU has a real advantage in proximity and practicality. Its students often work part-time or intern during the school year because major employers are nearby and the school has strong commuter-style connections to the region’s labor market. That can matter a lot if your goal is to start building experience quickly rather than paying more for a campus name.

On academics, Berkeley offers broader depth at the high end. There are more research opportunities, more academically intense peers, and stronger recognition across fields like economics, math, public policy, sciences, and graduate-school pathways. If you want a degree that travels more easily outside California or you are aiming for highly selective employers and programs where institutional prestige carries extra weight, Berkeley can justify the higher price.

The biggest differentiator is how much you would actually pay. If Berkeley means substantial loans and SJSU lets you graduate with little or no debt, SJSU is very often the smarter financial decision. If the cost gap is modest because of aid, Berkeley becomes much more compelling because you would be getting the stronger academic platform and brand without taking on an outsized financial burden.
