University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Carnegie Mellon for software internships?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus intensity: UIUC gives you a huge CS ecosystem with a very large alumni base and a deep pipeline to major tech employers, while Carnegie Mellon offers a smaller, more concentrated environment where CS recruiting is extremely visible and the school’s name carries unusual weight in software hiring circles. For software internships, both schools can absolutely get you interviews at top companies. The difference is less about whether recruiters know the school and more about how you want to navigate recruiting once you get there.

CMU tends to have a slight edge in pure brand signal for software roles, especially with employers that heavily target elite CS programs. Recruiters know CMU students are trained in a rigorous, technical environment, and that can help at the resume screen stage. The campus culture is also very internship-focused, so you will be surrounded by peers who are preparing early for coding interviews, project work, and recruiting timelines.

UIUC is hardly behind in any meaningful way for internships. It has one of the strongest CS reputations in the country, major employer presence, and a very broad alumni network across big tech, trading firms, startups, and enterprise software. Because the program is larger, there are simply many students landing strong internships every year, and companies are very used to hiring there.

In practice, personal projects, interview prep, prior experience, and timing matter more than the gap between these two names. A student at UIUC with strong LeetCode prep, solid systems coursework, and a good project portfolio will often outperform a less prepared CMU student, and the reverse is also true.

If your question is strictly which school gives the slight edge for software internships, I’d give that edge to Carnegie Mellon because of its unusually strong CS brand and concentrated recruiting culture. But the margin is not large enough to outweigh major differences in cost, fit, or stress level. UIUC is still an outstanding choice for software internships.
