University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs Notre Dame: suburban campus feel vs city campus feel

Notre Dame has the more classic enclosed-campus atmosphere. The campus is very distinct from its surroundings, with a strong residential feel, a lot of school tradition, and a setting where students spend much of their time on campus itself. South Bend is there, but Notre Dame does not usually feel like a city campus in the way an urban university does. It feels more like a destination campus with its own identity and rhythm.

UIUC is not exactly a city campus like you would get in Chicago or Boston, but it is far less insulated. Campustown sits right next to the university, and the line between campus life and town life is much blurrier. As you walk around, you are constantly moving between academic buildings, student apartments, cafes, buses, and commercial strips. That creates a livelier, more open environment, though some students experience it as less picturesque or less tightly knit than Notre Dame.

UIUC feels bigger, more spread into the surrounding community, and more mixed-use. If what you want is a strong contained-campus atmosphere, Notre Dame is the closer match. If you want a school where campus and town are more intertwined and it feels easier to step into off-campus life, UIUC fits that description better.
