How does Chapman University admissions difficulty compare to UC Berkeley for undergraduate applicants?

UC Berkeley is much harder to get into overall than Chapman for undergraduate applicants. Berkeley draws a very large pool of top academic students from California, the rest of the U.S., and abroad, and admissions can become especially intense in high-demand areas like engineering, computer science, business-related pathways, and some sciences. Chapman is still selective and not a safety for everyone, but it is typically more accessible and less cutthroat than Berkeley.

Berkeley tends to fit applicants with very strong grades in the most rigorous courses available, along with a profile that holds up in a highly competitive statewide and national pool. Even students who look excellent on paper can be denied because Berkeley has limited space and a huge number of applicants with similar academic strength. At Berkeley, the baseline academic bar is simply much higher across the board.

Chapman makes more sense in the conversation as a school where a solid to strong student can be genuinely competitive, especially if their application aligns well with a specific program and they show clear interest in what Chapman offers. Some Chapman programs can be notably more selective than the university overall, especially film, performing arts, and other portfolio or audition-based areas, so difficulty can rise depending on the path you are applying to. Still, that is different from Berkeley, where the overall level of selectivity is on another tier.

The main exception is that certain specialized Chapman programs can be quite competitive, but for general undergraduate admission, Berkeley is distinctly tougher.
