Which is better for outdoor activities: Williams College or Bowdoin College?

Bowdoin College tends to feel better for an outdoorsy student, especially if you want easy access to both water and a campus culture that leans heavily into getting outside. Brunswick puts you close to the Maine coast, and Bowdoin’s outing scene is closely tied to activities like sea kayaking, coastal trips, and cabin weekends.

The biggest differentiator is location. Bowdoin gives you a wider outdoor mix: ocean access, islands, beaches, trails, and winter sports within reach. That creates a different everyday feel from Williams, where the outdoors are strong but more centered on mountains, hiking, skiing, and rural New England landscape rather than water-based recreation.

Another important difference is how outdoor culture shows up socially. At Bowdoin, being outdoors is more woven into the identity of the school, and a lot of students use weekends for trips that feel distinctly Maine. Williams absolutely has outdoorsy students and excellent access to hiking and skiing in the Berkshires, but the outdoor vibe reads a bit more regional and less defining of the whole campus atmosphere.
