Should I choose Arizona State or NYU for a marketing major?

I’m trying to decide between Arizona State and NYU for marketing, and I’m stuck because both seem appealing for different reasons. I want to study marketing in a way that will actually help me build career connections and get real experience.

I’m looking for the school that would make the most sense for someone interested in marketing and starting a career after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost and campus experience versus location and brand access. Arizona State is typically far less expensive and offers a more traditional college environment, while NYU puts you in New York City with unusually direct access to major media, fashion, tech, entertainment, and advertising industries. For marketing specifically, that New York location matters because internships, networking events, and part-time professional experience can happen during the school year, not just in the summer.

At NYU, the strongest advantage is proximity to employers and alumni in industries where marketing is especially active. If you are proactive, it is easier to stack internships, attend industry panels, and build a network before graduation. The tradeoff is that NYU is expensive, the environment is less of a classic campus, and competition for opportunities can feel intense because you are surrounded by many ambitious students in the same city.

At ASU, the strongest advantage is value and scale. ASU has a large business ecosystem, strong employer outreach, and plenty of student organizations, internships, and practical opportunities, especially if you take initiative early. For a student who wants marketing experience without taking on the cost of NYU, ASU can absolutely get you there. The difference is that you may need to be more deliberate about creating national-level connections, and the day-to-day access to top advertising and media hubs is not the same.

If cost is even somewhat important, ASU makes a lot of sense because marketing is a field where internships, portfolio-building, and networking often matter more than paying a premium for the degree itself. If money is not a major concern and you know you want to build a career tied to New York industries like media, luxury, fashion, entertainment, or big-brand advertising, NYU has the clearer edge. NYU gives you the stronger platform for marketing, but ASU is the smarter choice when return on investment is part of the equation.
