American University vs UNC Chapel Hill for business: which is better for undergrad business students?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both American University and UNC Chapel Hill are on it for business. I know they’re pretty different schools, but I’m mostly wondering which one is the stronger choice for an undergraduate business student in terms of academics, internships, and career opportunities.

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out where I’d actually have the best overall experience for business.

UNC Chapel Hill is the stronger choice for most undergraduate business students. Its business school has a bigger national reputation at the undergrad level, a broader alumni network, and stronger on-campus recruiting across consulting, finance, accounting, and corporate roles. For a student focused on academics plus post-grad outcomes, UNC usually offers more depth and reach.

You also get access to a large public research university with strong economics, statistics, public policy, and data-related coursework that pairs well with business.

American can be excellent for students interested in business tied to policy, government, international affairs, or nonprofit work, especially because of its Washington, DC location.

The internship picture is more mixed than people assume. American’s DC location is a real advantage for in-semester internships, especially with agencies, advocacy groups, and organizations where business intersects with politics or public affairs.

The student experience is also quite different. UNC has a bigger campus culture, more school spirit, and a more traditional college environment, while American is smaller and more politically oriented. For many business students, UNC offers the fuller combination of academic strength, recruiting power, and alumni access; American makes the most sense when your version of business is closely connected to Washington sectors.
