Which is better for undergraduate research: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Swarthmore?

UIUC has the edge if your top priority is the sheer scale and breadth of undergraduate research. It is a major research university with extensive labs, large federally funded projects, and especially deep opportunities in engineering, computer science, physics, agriculture, and other STEM fields. Swarthmore is excellent for undergraduates too, but its strength is access and mentorship rather than the overall volume of research infrastructure.

At UIUC, the biggest differentiator is range. There are simply far more departments, research centers, graduate programs, and specialized facilities, so students can find niche projects that may not exist at a small liberal arts college. If you already suspect you want a lab-heavy STEM path or a very specific subfield, UIUC gives you more possible entry points.

At Swarthmore, the standout feature is faculty attention. Because it is a small college without graduate students competing for the same kinds of roles, undergraduates often work more directly with professors and can take on meaningful responsibility earlier. That can translate into closer mentoring, stronger recommendation letters, and a clearer path to independent work, especially in the sciences and social sciences.
