Auburn vs Rutgers for finance: which is better for an undergraduate finance degree?

I’m trying to decide between Auburn and Rutgers for finance and want to pick the stronger option for undergrad. I care about getting a solid foundation in finance and having good career prospects after graduation.

I know both schools have different reputations and locations, so I’m trying to understand which one is generally the better choice for a finance major.

For undergraduate finance, Rutgers is usually the stronger option if your priority is access to finance recruiting, internships, and alumni connections tied to the Northeast job market. Its location in New Jersey puts you much closer to New York City and major financial employers, and Rutgers Business School has a well-established presence with students pursuing banking, corporate finance, and related roles. Auburn can still deliver a solid finance education, but it tends to make the most sense for students who want to build their career in the Southeast and value a more traditional campus environment.

Rutgers fits the student who wants proximity to internships during the school year, a larger business-school pipeline, and easier access to employers in New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. For finance especially, geography matters a lot, and Rutgers benefits from being in a region with dense recruiting activity. If you are ambitious about internships early and want more chances to network in person without needing to travel far, Rutgers has a real advantage.

Auburn fits the student who wants a classic college experience, strong school spirit, and a pathway into corporate roles across the South. Its finance program is respected, and students can absolutely do well from Auburn, especially in commercial banking, corporate finance, financial planning, and regional business networks. The main difference is that Auburn is not as naturally plugged into the biggest finance hub in the country, so landing certain opportunities may require more deliberate networking.

If the question is purely which school gives you the stronger platform for finance career prospects, Rutgers has the edge. If cost is similar and you are aiming at the broadest set of finance opportunities, especially those connected to NYC-area recruiting, Rutgers is the more compelling choice. Auburn becomes more attractive if you strongly prefer its campus culture or expect to work in the Southeast after graduation.
