Is University of Houston or UC Berkeley harder to get into?

UC Berkeley is much harder to get into than the University of Houston. Berkeley is one of the most selective public universities in the country, while Houston is far more accessible in its admissions process. In practice, applicants who are competitive for Houston may still be nowhere near competitive for Berkeley, especially in popular majors.

One major difference is the academic profile Berkeley expects. Berkeley draws a very large pool of high-achieving applicants with top grades, rigorous coursework, and strong extracurricular records, and many of its colleges and majors are especially competitive. Even among strong students, admission there is never close to predictable.

The University of Houston is a respected large public university, but its admissions landscape is not in the same tier of selectivity. Houston admits a much broader range of students, and for many in-state applicants, admission can be more straightforward based on academic credentials. That makes it a realistic option for a much wider part of a college list.

Another key distinction is national demand. Berkeley receives intense interest from across California, the rest of the U.S., and internationally, which drives up competition across the board. Houston is well known and popular, especially in Texas, but it does not face the same level of nationwide admissions pressure.
