University of Houston fits the student who wants the sense that they are attending school inside a major city. Houston is huge, diverse, and full of food, arts, internships, pro sports, museums, and different neighborhoods to explore. UH students can tap into all of that, and the campus location makes the school feel tied to the city’s energy, even though you still need to be smart about transportation because Houston is very car-oriented.

ASU Tempe fits someone who wants an active social environment with city access, but also wants college life to be easier and more self-contained. If you want a polished, lively student area with easy off-campus options and some city access, ASU can be more convenient and immediately fun, but it reads less urban overall.
