Is Santa Clara University or UC San Diego better for business majors?
I'm trying to decide between Santa Clara and UC San Diego and keep seeing both mentioned as good options, but I’m not sure which one is stronger for business overall.
I’m interested in things like the business curriculum, internship opportunities, and how well each school prepares students for jobs after graduation.

UC San Diego is the stronger name overall, but for a student specifically focused on undergraduate business, Santa Clara usually has the clearer edge. Santa Clara has a dedicated Leavey School of Business with a full undergraduate business experience, while UC San Diego’s business-related options are more scattered across economics, management science, and interdisciplinary programs. Santa Clara is also in the middle of Silicon Valley, which matters a lot for internships, employer access, and networking during the school year.
The biggest differentiator is the curriculum structure. At Santa Clara, business is a central undergraduate offering, so you get a more traditional path with business core courses, concentrations, and classmates who are also specifically studying business. At UC San Diego, students interested in business often piece together economics, accounting, data, or management-oriented coursework rather than entering a classic undergraduate business school environment.
Location is the next major factor. Santa Clara’s proximity to San Jose, Palo Alto, and the broader Silicon Valley ecosystem creates a very direct pipeline to internships in finance, accounting, consulting, marketing, and tech-adjacent business roles. UC San Diego has strong access to the San Diego economy, especially in biotech, healthcare, startups, and analytics-oriented work, but it is not as naturally centered on undergraduate business recruiting in the same way Santa Clara is.
For career preparation, Santa Clara tends to feel more intentionally built around undergraduate outcomes in business. The alumni network in Bay Area business circles is a real asset, and the school’s employer connections are especially useful for students who want practical experience early. UC San Diego can absolutely lead to strong outcomes, particularly for students who are more quantitative, entrepreneurial, or interested in combining business with economics, data, or STEM, but Santa Clara is usually the more direct business platform.
