Is Santa Clara University or UC Davis better for biology majors?

UC Davis has the edge for biology majors. Its biology offerings are broader, its research ecosystem is much larger, and it has especially strong depth in life sciences areas like genetics, ecology, animal biology, plant sciences, and biomedical research that matter for both grad school and pre-med preparation.

The biggest difference is scale and academic range. UC Davis has multiple biology-related departments and labs across the College of Biological Sciences, the School of Medicine, the veterinary school, agricultural and environmental sciences, and affiliated research centers. That means more upper-level course options, more specialized subfields, and more chances to explore different directions within biology before committing to one.

Research access is the next major separator. At Davis, the volume of ongoing research is simply much higher, so there are more labs doing work in molecular biology, neuroscience, evolution, microbiology, ecology, and health-related fields. Santa Clara students can still do research, and the smaller size can make faculty access feel more personal, but Davis gives you a much wider research menu and stronger exposure to a major public research environment.

For pre-med and grad school, UC Davis also tends to offer stronger infrastructure tied directly to the sciences. You are studying in a place with nearby clinical and health-related opportunities, and a campus culture where large numbers of students are pursuing research and health professions. Santa Clara can be a good choice if you know you want smaller classes, close professor relationships, and a more intimate campus feel, but purely on biology program strength, UC Davis is the more powerful option.
