Loyola Marymount vs UC Berkeley for value: which is the better college investment?

UC Berkeley is usually the better investment overall, especially if your total cost is anywhere close to Loyola Marymount’s. Berkeley tends to deliver stronger brand recognition, broader national and international reach, and access to one of the deepest alumni and employer networks in the country. It also sits in the Bay Area, which gives students unusually direct proximity to tech, startups, finance, policy, and research opportunities during the school year.

One of the biggest differences is employer pull. Berkeley’s name carries a lot of weight across industries, and that matters not just for first jobs but for internships, recruiting pipelines, and graduate school visibility. In fields like engineering, computer science, economics, data-related work, and many sciences, Berkeley’s academic reputation and recruiting ecosystem are hard to match.

The cost side usually points the same way. LMU can be a very good school, but as a private university it often comes with a much higher sticker price unless you receive substantial merit aid or need-based aid.
