San Diego State usually comes out ahead on value, especially if cost is a major part of the equation. It offers a well-known public university experience, strong outcomes in business, engineering, public health, and communications, and much lower tuition for California residents than Loyola Marymount. Unless LMU is giving you unusually strong aid, SDSU tends to deliver more return per dollar.

The biggest differentiator is price. Loyola Marymount is a private university in Los Angeles, and its sticker price is substantially higher. That higher cost can be worth it for some students, but from a pure ROI lens, paying far less at SDSU while still earning a respected degree usually puts you in a stronger position after graduation, especially if loans are involved.

A second factor is program strength tied to employability. SDSU has scale, broad name recognition in California, and especially solid pathways in applied, career-oriented fields. It also benefits from strong regional employer connections in San Diego and across Southern California. LMU has respected programs too, particularly in areas like film, business, and communication, but its premium price means those strengths need to matter a lot to justify the difference.

Campus environment matters as part of value too, because four years of fit affects what you actually get out of college. LMU offers a smaller, more personal campus with smaller classes and a polished residential feel in Westchester. SDSU is larger, more energetic, and more varied socially and academically, which often means more clubs, more course options, and a broader alumni base, though with less individual attention.

Reputation is a bit split by audience. LMU has strong prestige in certain circles and may feel more selective or boutique, but SDSU is very well known and widely respected as a major public university. For many students, employers care more about your experience, internships, and major than about paying a premium for LMU’s brand.

The one scenario where LMU can become the better value is if your net cost ends up close to SDSU’s because of scholarships or if you specifically want its smaller private-school setting and LA-based opportunities. Without that, SDSU is the more sensible investment for most students focused on return on cost.
