Penn State or Rutgers: which is better for internships?

For internships, Rutgers often has the edge if you want easier access during the school year, especially because of its location and proximity to New York City, Philadelphia, and major New Jersey employers. Penn State also places students into strong internships, but its advantages tend to come more from alumni reach, big-company recruiting, and a traditional campus network rather than sheer geographic convenience.

Rutgers fits the student who wants to be near dense internship markets and is likely to take advantage of part-time or semester-long opportunities during the academic year. Being in New Jersey makes it more realistic to commute to companies in finance, pharma, healthcare, tech, media, and government, and Rutgers students can tap both the New York and Philly corridors. That can matter a lot if you want multiple internships before senior year, not just one summer experience.

Penn State makes a lot of sense for the student who wants a classic residential campus but still wants serious internship outcomes through career fairs, employer partnerships, and an especially large alumni network. The tradeoff is that internships during the semester may be less convenient simply because State College is not next to a major metro area.

If your field depends heavily on being near cities and employers year-round, Rutgers is usually the more practical internship environment. If you are comfortable relying more on summer internships, structured recruiting, and a broad alumni base, Penn State can be just as effective and sometimes stronger in certain majors.
