Should I choose Arizona State or Bowdoin for a liberal arts education?

For a strong liberal arts education, Bowdoin is much closer to what you’re describing. It is a small liberal arts college built around broad undergraduate study, small classes, close faculty interaction, and discussion-heavy learning across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Arizona State can absolutely offer excellent classes and a wide academic menu, but its overall structure is that of a very large public research university, so the day-to-day experience is usually less centered on intimate, seminar-style education.

Bowdoin fits students who want their college identity to be rooted in undergraduate learning itself. The curriculum encourages exploration, and because the school is relatively small, classes are more likely to emphasize reading, writing, conversation, and direct engagement with professors rather than large introductory lectures. If you like the idea of professors knowing your name, classmates who are deeply invested in class discussion, and a campus culture where intellectual life is woven into the whole student experience, Bowdoin stands out.

Arizona State makes more sense for a student who wants flexibility, scale, and access to a huge range of departments, programs, and opportunities while still being able to build a liberal arts path. You can find honors seminars, strong faculty, and interdisciplinary study there, especially through Barrett, The Honors College, which offers a much smaller academic feel within ASU. But outside of those pockets, the classroom experience can be more variable, and you may need to be more proactive to create the discussion-based environment you want.

If your main question is which school is more intentionally designed for a broad, discussion-centered liberal arts education, Bowdoin is the clearer answer. ASU is compelling for students who want a bigger university ecosystem and are comfortable carving out a smaller academic community within it.
