Is Colgate or NYU better for city life?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: NYU is fully embedded in New York City, while Colgate is a traditional residential campus in a very small town. At NYU, the city is part of daily life because classes, food, internships, nightlife, and events all happen within Manhattan. At Colgate, your day-to-day experience is centered on campus and the village of Hamilton, with a much quieter rhythm and far less spontaneous access to urban activities.

For city life specifically, NYU is the clear answer. You can walk or take the subway to museums, concerts, restaurants, neighborhoods, part-time jobs, and professional opportunities without needing a car or major planning. The social scene is also more spread across the city, so a lot of student life happens off campus rather than in one contained college bubble.

Colgate has a very different feel. Hamilton is charming but small, and the school is much more self-contained. That can be great if you want a close-knit campus community, classic residential college traditions, and a place where most of your social life revolves around other students and campus events, but it does not feel urban in any meaningful way.

Another day-to-day difference is structure. NYU gives you constant access to city energy, but it can feel less unified as a campus because students are dispersed through the city. Colgate offers a stronger sense of campus cohesion and easier immersion in school culture, but you give up the convenience of stepping outside and immediately being in a major city environment.

If your priority is being in or near a city and having easy access to urban activities, NYU fits that much better. Colgate makes more sense only if what you actually want is a traditional campus experience with occasional trips away, rather than city life as part of everyday living.
