Colgate vs Richmond: which has better student life?

The biggest practical tradeoff is setting: Colgate offers a more secluded, traditional residential-college experience where campus life is the center of everything, while Richmond gives you a self-contained campus with easier access to a city and more off-campus variety. That difference shapes student life a lot. At Colgate, weekends and social life tend to revolve around the campus itself; at Richmond, students have campus traditions too, but they also have Richmond, Virginia as an outlet for food, internships, and getting off campus.

In campus culture, Colgate often feels more tight-knit and immersive. Because it is in Hamilton, New York, students spend a lot of time together, and that can create strong school spirit, close communities, and a lively residential feel. The flip side is that some students find it insular, and social life can feel repetitive if you want more variety.

Richmond usually feels a bit more balanced and less isolated. Students often describe the campus as attractive, comfortable, and active without being overwhelmingly intense. The social scene is there, including clubs, campus events, and Greek life, but the atmosphere can come across as somewhat more polished and less all-consuming than Colgate’s.
